Braille Institute's VisionSim (v3.0) app for iPhone and iPad offers a unique perspective, allowing individuals with normal sight to comprehend the visual challenges of nine degenerative eye diseases. The simulated conditions include age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, chronic open-angle glaucoma, corneal edema, diabetic retinopathy, homonymous hemianopia, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and retinitis pigmentosa.
The app utilises the device's camera alongside digital filters to provide users with an immersive experience of the symptoms corresponding to each disease. Through intuitive touch controls, users can adjust the intensity of these visual impairments. Furthermore, users have the option to save still images from the simulations for personal reference or sharing.
(Note: For iOS version 6+ users - To save your VisionSim 'simulator' images, navigate to SETTINGS > PRIVACY > PHOTOS > enable VisionSim 'ON')
In addition to the simulation feature, the application offers comprehensive insights into the characteristics of each eye condition, encompassing visual phenomena, symptoms, causes, and treatment options. Users can conveniently explore further resources by accessing the Braille Institute's website or contacting them directly via email.
This exceptional tool serves as a catalyst for empathy and understanding towards the widespread community affected by these visual impairments.
